The internet and your doctor are right. Vitamins are not necessary if you are eating a proper diet. Your doctor must be one of the few out there that are eating properly. Now, what is properly. In general, you need to eat fruits and vegetables everyday and twice a day if you can. You must also eat fish at least 3 times a week (Omega 3s). If you live in the Northwest US like I do, I will not get enough vitamin D because of less sun light so I must take that vitamin. It is hard to find whole grains, eat eggs often, and more so sometimes a take Vitamin B. So, it is up to the individual to get their balance diet which may need vitamin supplements.

Now the next part is your vitamin source. You can go to the store and buy synthetic vitamins but I would not. Take organic natural vitamins. Organic are gentle on the stomach and have a higher absolution rate. I would go with Nutrilite. They have organic farms in Washington State and California and were the first supplement company. As far as an organic multivitamin, take Nutrilite Double X Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient. As you can see, it is more than a multivitamin. It also contains minerals and phytonutrient. There is also Nutrilite Daily Multivitamin/Multimineral if you are wanting something simple. Go to http://Arcameda.com and click on vitamins then Multivitamin to get more information on these. They have organic vitamins for everything. If you have any further questions, go to my profile to email me. Hope all is well.

I'm not sure who has said a vegan diet is 'natural'; it is a diet choice made mainly by those who want to minimise their contribution to animal suffering and, like vegetarian diets and diets that include meat, a vegan diet can be very healthy or very unhealthy depending on the food eaten.

There is much that is unnatural in many foods and many diets these days.

Some vegans take supplements, as do some vegetarians and some meat-eaters. Shelves in chemists, supermarkets and health food shops groan with bottles of vitamin pills, and it's a thriving online trade; there aren't that many vegans – clearly people with all kinds of diets feel that their diet is lacking and needs supplementing.

Many, if not most, vegans don't take vitamins and supplements – where did you get hold of the idea that they do?

Your friend's illness was not due simply to having a vegan diet – many people thrive on a vegan diet. It may have been due to a poor diet – as I said before, any diet can be unhealthy – or not eating enough. You can see form the number of vegans using this board that there are many healthy vegans, most of them not taking supplements.

Edit* Re brittle bone disease – I am a long term vegan; I am also a middle-aged woman (so at risk for brittle bone disease or osteoporosis) and I'm currently taking medication one of whose side effects is loss of bone mass. And bone scans STILL show I have strong bones. Don't believe everything you read.

I can say, as a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, that as much information as you've given us, I'd want a whole lot more information before I could responsibly give you a professional opinion. A lot of my information needs would be around your mental and physical history, but, there's no need to go into it here since there's no way I can conduct a clinical interview to my satisfaction in order to give you a responsible and professional opinion. I'd suggest you go to a community mental health clinic for an interview and you'll get your answer readily. God Bless you.

Finally, someone who is questioning the system. You don't need them at all; only in unique medical situations but not to work out.
Muscles grow because of exercise not protein shakes & bars.

Good for you for not giving into the cash cow of the supplement industry!

I am a vegetarian (almost vegan) and it is a very healthy diet. There are plenty of proteins out there that you can eat, though you may want to think about eating small amounts of fish for the (healthy) fatty acids omega 3 and 6 found in fish and other things you aren't eating (fish being the healthiest). There are plenty of proteins you can get as a vegan. Tofu, beans, tempeh, (a soy bean thing you can get in a health food store) and nuts are some good proteins you can get as a vegan. For calcium and vitamin D you can take supplements and drink calcium and vitamin D enriched orange juice made by Tropicana. You were saying how you got sick after eating meat. This is because since you haven't eaten meat in months your digestive system is not used to it and could not handle it. If you plan on going back to eating meat bring it into your diet slowly so you don't get sick again.

    Hope this helps!

Oh Knight – you do worry me…

If the creatine in your supplement is around 5% then that's OK – I wouldn't take pure supplements that's for sure – because they are known to cause kidney damage and nothing (and no one ) is worth that!

I read your question and asked at the gym- it is common to go to the loo more at night and for urine to be..err… stronger and darker. I got told off for asking because they thought I was thinking about it – not good for a woman! LOL – I don't want to end up looking like a body builder!

The advice was to stop taking it for a week or two and then start again- creatine puts pressure on the kidneys.

A few months ago you may remember giving me some advice about a healthy diet etc when I was under stress, follow that advice and eat plenty of good food (high protein if you are building muscle).

I can tell you exactly why you're gaining weight.

Look at your caloric total for the day: 1000. That is putting your body in starvation mode. Anything below 1200 calories a day makes your body think that it is in a fight or flight situation and it will pack on anything you put into your system. At minimum you need to be consuming 1200/day for weightloss, 1500-1800 for maintenance, and about 2000 to gain under normal and healthy circumstances.

Also, if you want to use protein shakes, go for the Biggest Loser brand. A lot of the other brands have lots of fillers and added sugars (which you mentioned). Drink those about once a day, after a work out. It'll help rebuild muscle. Otherwise your body is just going to store it for later use, which is what fat is. It's stored energy that your body doesn't need at the moment.

There's a website I think you should look at. It's http://www.myfitnesspal.com. Put in your weight, height, level of physical activity, and it will give you the proper calories you need to eat at MINIMUM to lose weight. It also allows you to figure out your calories burned with exercise and tells you to eat more based on that caloric loss. The goal is to stay right at a 1200 calorie limit for the day (for myself).

One quick point: with vitamins and herbs there absolutely can be interactions and unwanted effects. Herbs and supplements are not harmless and can/do have side effects and cautions.

Custom making vitamins is expensive. A regular everyday vitamin costs little to make because making it in mass quantities lowers costs drastically (same principle as buying a bigger box of cereal at Costco). However, there are "boutique herbalists" or specialist pharmacies that will compound a specific multi-vitamin for you.
